The vandalised sculpture before treatment covered in yellow spray paint. Treatment is complicated by the steep slope around the sculpture!

Carrying out solvent tests to determine how best to remove the paint

The initial stages of cleaning with solvents removed most of the paint

A second, more detailed clean was then required to remove paint from the crevices

After the surface was rinsed, a coating of microcrystalline wax was applied to improve the surface appearance and provide some protection

This sculpture is made in Kilkenny limestone and belongs to Harlow Art Trust. The fish carved in relief on the surface evoke a watery theme; the sculpture was originally located within a pool that has subsequently been drained. In 2011 it was vandalised, and its entire surface covered in yellow spray paint. We were asked to remove the paint from the surface and the sculpture was then given a layer of wax to improve its appearance and provide some protection in future.
